How the Eye Shape Detector works

Three steps from photo to personalised eye analysis.

01

Upload your photo

Choose a clear, front-facing photo from your device or take one with your camera. Natural light and a neutral expression give the best results.

02

AI detects landmarks

MediaPipe FaceLandmarker maps 468 facial landmarks in your photo, pinpointing the exact position of each eye corner, top, and bottom point.

03

Get your eye profile

Receive your eye shape (round, almond, narrow), canthal tilt (upturned, neutral, downturned), eye setting, and personalised makeup tips.

The main eye shapes explained

The Eye Shape Detector classifies your primary shape, canthal tilt, and eye setting independently.

The most versatile eye shape

Almond

Tapers to a gentle point at both corners, like an almond. Suits almost every makeup technique — smoky, cat-eye, cut-crease.

Open, bright, and expressive

Round

A tall vertical opening with a near-circular appearance. Iris is almost fully visible. Best elongated with liner at the outer corner.

Natural cat-eye lift

Upturned

Outer corners sit higher than inner corners, creating an inherent lift. Associated with a youthful, feline appearance.

Soft and approachable

Downturned

Outer corners angle gently downward. A soft, gentle expression that can be lifted beautifully with the right liner technique.

Intense and mysterious

Narrow

Smaller vertical opening, giving a sultry, intense look. Often pairs beautifully with shimmer on the lid and minimal liner.

Close-set · Normal · Wide-set

Eye Setting

The horizontal spacing between your eyes relative to a single eye-width. Affects where you place highlight and shadow for the most balanced result.

What the Eye Shape Detector measures

The tool computes three independent geometric measurements from your facial landmarks, then combines them into a complete eye profile:

  • Eye Aspect RatioThe ratio of vertical opening height to horizontal width. Higher ratios indicate rounder eyes; lower ratios indicate narrower eyes.
  • Canthal TiltThe angle of the outer eye corner relative to the inner corner. Reported in degrees — positive values indicate upturned, negative indicate downturned.
  • Inter-Eye RatioThe gap between your inner eye corners divided by the average eye width. Values below 0.85 indicate close-set; above 1.2 indicate wide-set.

Tips for the best result

  • Use a front-facing, well-lit photo — natural light is ideal
  • Look directly into the camera with a relaxed, neutral expression
  • Keep eyes fully open — avoid squinting or excessive blinking
  • Avoid dramatic eye makeup that significantly alters lid shape
  • Remove glasses or contact lenses that tint the eye colour
  • Ensure the photo is in focus — blurry images reduce accuracy

Eye Shape Detector — frequently asked questions

What is the most common eye shape?

Almond is considered the most common eye shape globally. It is also the most versatile — almost every eye makeup look flatters almond eyes. Round and slightly downturned shapes are also very prevalent.

What is canthal tilt and why does it matter for makeup?

Canthal tilt refers to the angle of the outer eye corner relative to the inner corner. An upturned tilt (outer corner higher) creates a naturally lifted, cat-eye effect, while a downturned tilt (outer corner lower) gives a softer look. Knowing your tilt helps you choose liner directions that enhance rather than fight your natural eye structure.

What does close-set or wide-set mean?

Eye setting describes the horizontal distance between your eyes relative to the width of one eye. Close-set eyes sit less than one eye-width apart; wide-set eyes sit more than one eye-width apart. This affects eyeshadow placement — inner corner highlights can visually widen close-set eyes, while darker inner-corner shading can bring wide-set eyes closer.

Can my eye shape change over time?

The fundamental bony structure of your eye socket remains the same throughout life. However, skin laxity, hooding, and puffiness can affect how your eye shape appears, especially with age. The Eye Shape Detector analyses the appearance of your eye in a given photo, which may vary slightly with these factors.

What photo works best for eye shape detection?

Use a clear, well-lit, front-facing photo with a neutral expression. Avoid sunglasses, heavy eye makeup that changes the apparent lid shape, or extreme angles. A natural light selfie with eyes fully open and looking directly at the camera gives the most accurate result.

Is the Eye Shape Detector accurate?

The tool uses the same MediaPipe FaceLandmarker AI that powers the Pretty Scale tool, detecting 468 facial landmarks including precise eye contour points. Results are highly consistent with professional eye shape assessments, though photo quality and lighting can introduce variance. Results are for guidance and entertainment.
